LIDAR Topographic & Bathymetric Mapping Technologies

LiDAR mapping technology has been utilized in the geomatics industry for over 20 years in a variety of applications. Spearheaded in Indonesia by private sectors of natural resources, agribusiness and forestry, LiDAR has rapidly gained acceptance as the de-facto large-scale topographic data acquisition method.

With its ‘One-Map’ policy deadline just around the corner, the Indonesian Government is now looking towards LiDAR mapping to provide its spatial data requirements in an accurate and timely manner, particularly in areas such as irrigation, spatial planning, land administration and urban development.

This talk will discuss how LiDAR technology works; its applications; technical developments over the years and its flexibility compared to more traditional aerial mapping techniques. It will also look at the emerging technology of Bathymetric LiDAR, which has successfully been piloted in Indonesia this year for the first time and explore its potential applications for irrigation and coastal zone management.
