Integration of Solar Technology and Visual Arts for Urban Communities in Creating Resilient and Sustainable Cities and Settlements
Neighborhood Unit 016 Tomang, located in Grogol Petamburan, West Jakarta, is a densely populated residential area. Under DKI Provincial Regulations, several neighborhood associations in Tomang are categorized as mild to moderate slum areas. To address environmental quality issues, residents of Neighborhood Unit 016 have taken part in the 2024 DKI Jakarta Climate Village Program, carrying out initiatives ranging from administrative improvements to the development of environmental infrastructure.

One of the current initiatives in progress is the development of a public mural in the Kampung Barat area. Mural art was selected not only to beautify the environment but also because murals can influence residents’ behavior and raise awareness about social and environmental issues. This form of art also encourages communities to collaborate, expressing shared aspirations and strengthening social capital among residents.
In addition to visual education efforts, Neighborhood Unit 016 continues to face challenges due to insufficient street lighting.
Several narrow and densely populated alleys lack access to the electricity grid, creating safety hazards at night. The implementation of renewable energy presents a strategic solution. As such, this program will introduce competitive solar technology for neighborhood lighting while simultaneously reducing carbon emissions.
Two solutions:
Solar Lighting Installation: A solar-powered lighting system, comprising photovoltaic panels, battery storage, and LED street luminaires, shall be installed at strategic points along the main alley of Neighborhood Unit 016. The system is designed to operate autonomously during nighttime, thereby reducing dependency on conventional electricity sources and enhancing the efficiency and reliability of public lighting infrastructure.
Environmental Education Mural: A minimum of one large-scale mural (exceeding 20 m²) shall be developed on a public wall within Neighborhood Unit 016. The mural will convey messages on cleanliness and environmental conservation, incorporating themes and visual elements inspired by Betawi traditional culture.
