Universitas Bina Nusantara (BINUS) students have achieved remarkable success in a collaborative research initiative with the National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN), focusing on the development of fly ash-based geopolymer concrete. This project highlights the students’ active role in advancing sustainable construction materials and their contribution to innovative solutions for the industry.

Outstanding Contributions to Sustainable Material Development

Under the mentorship of Dr. Yureana Wijayanti, S.T., M.Eng., Ph.D., BINUS students Alfaldo Branoyasensa Baria and Nobert Olvan Victorianus played pivotal roles in this groundbreaking research. Their work centers on two key areas:

  1. Patent Development: The students contributed to patents that explore innovative material compositions and processes:
    • Komposisi dan Proses Pembuatan Material Geopolimer Berbahan Limbah Abu Terbang Serta Plastik Rekayasa Ulang.
    • Metode Pembuatan Geopolimer Berbasis Pemanfaatan Sifat Pozzolan Abu Terbang Kelas F dan Serbuk Kaca Silika Serta Produk yang Dihasilkannya.

These patents showcase the potential of reusing industrial byproducts like Class F fly ash and silica glass powder in creating high-performance geopolymer materials.

  2. Life Cycle Assessment (LCA): The team conducted a comprehensive LCA to evaluate the environmental impact of geopolymer concrete. Their findings demonstrated the material’s ability to significantly reduce carbon emissions, positioning it as a viable alternative to traditional Portland cement.

Pioneering Green Innovations

The research focuses on geopolymer concrete, a sustainable material that reduces dependency on Portland cement by utilizing fly ash—a coal combustion byproduct—with pozzolanic properties. By incorporating recycled plastic and silica glass powder, the team improved the material’s mechanical properties, aligning with global sustainability goals.

A Milestone for BINUS and Its Students

This achievement underscores BINUS students’ dedication to addressing environmental challenges through research and innovation. Their active participation in a project of national significance highlights BINUS University’s commitment to nurturing future leaders in science and technology.

Bridging Research and Industrial Impact

With its emphasis on sustainability, this collaborative effort between BINUS and BRIN holds immense potential for transforming the construction industry. The students’ contributions to this project are a testament to their academic excellence and their ability to make a meaningful impact on real-world challenges.

This success story is a proud moment for BINUS, demonstrating the university’s ability to empower its students to excel in research and innovation on both national and international stages.
