From September 3 to 5, 2024, civil engineering students from BINUSIAN 2026 and BINUSIAN 2027 conducted a site visit to two strategic infrastructure projects: the Jogja-Solo Toll Road and the Sabo Dam, as part of their academic activities and practical exposure to the construction field.

Jogja-Solo Toll Road: A Vital Infrastructure Link in Central Java

The visit began with an inspection of the Jogja-Solo Toll Road Project, a crucial infrastructure development that connects Yogyakarta and Solo. This project plays a significant role not only in improving regional connectivity but also in driving economic growth in Central Java and the Yogyakarta Special Region (DIY).

Civil engineering students had the valuable opportunity to observe the various phases of toll road construction, including road design and planning, bridge construction techniques, and the application of the latest technologies in road infrastructure management. Guided by professional engineers working on-site, the students also gained insights into risk management and the challenges faced in such large-scale infrastructure projects.

Sabo Dam: Protecting the Environment from Floods and Volcanic Mudflows

After visiting the toll road project, the students proceeded to the Sabo Dam, a flood control and lahar (volcanic mudflow) mitigation system located near Mount Merapi. The dam plays a critical role in protecting surrounding areas from volcanic material during eruptions of Merapi.

At this site, civil engineering students learned about disaster mitigation techniques and the importance of infrastructure like Sabo Dam in safeguarding local communities from natural hazards. They also delved into the planning and construction processes behind the dam and the technologies used to ensure its long-term sustainability and effectiveness.

Hands-on Experience in Civil Engineering

This site visit offered civil engineering students at BINUS a valuable hands-on experience, allowing them to witness how the theories they learn in class are applied in real-world infrastructure projects. It deepened their understanding of various aspects of infrastructure engineering, such as large-scale project management, structural design, and the use of cutting-edge technology on-site.

Additionally, the visit highlighted the complexity of civil engineering projects and the importance of cross-disciplinary coordination in overcoming challenges. This practical exposure will strengthen the students’ technical skills and better prepare them for the demands of the professional world after graduation.

The strategic project site visit to the Jogja-Solo Toll Road and Sabo Dam not only provided practical knowledge but also inspired BINUS civil engineering students to continue innovating and contributing to sustainable infrastructure development. Through this experience, they are expected to be better equipped to face future challenges and play an active role in building Indonesia’s infrastructure.
