On September 10, 2024, the Civil Engineering Department in collaboration with the Civil Engineering Student Association (HIMTES) of Binus University and ICE SC organized Civil on Duty 2024, an event aimed at empowering future civil engineers. With the theme “Innovation in Infrastructure Technology Amid the 4.0 Industrial Revolution,” this seminar brought together national and international experts to share insights on technological innovations in infrastructure in the face of the challenges of the Fourth Industrial Revolution.

National Speakers: Leaders in the Indonesian Construction Industry

The seminar featured two prominent figures from Indonesia’s construction industry. Djoko Sarwono, the Chairman of AKI (Indonesian Contractors Association), discussed how national contractors can harness the latest technologies to improve efficiency and quality in infrastructure projects. His presentation emphasized the importance of collaboration between government, contractors, and academics in creating innovative solutions to accelerate national development.

Rizky Agung S., S.T., M.Sc., the EVP of The General Civil Division at PT. Hutama Karya, shared his experience in implementing advanced technologies in large-scale projects across Indonesia. As one of Indonesia’s leading construction companies, PT. Hutama Karya plays a vital role in national infrastructure development. Rizky Agung explained how technologies like Building Information Modelling (BIM), construction automation, and other cutting-edge tools are being used to meet modern construction challenges.

International Speakers: Global Perspectives on Infrastructure Technology

In addition to the national speakers, two international experts provided a global perspective on infrastructure technology. Ir. Habibie Razak, IPU., ACPE., APEC Eng., CPEng. FlEAust., EngExec., IntPE(Aus), the Executive Director of the Central Indonesian Engineers Association (PII), discussed the importance of international standards and engineering competencies in the globalized world. His session highlighted the role of international certification in helping engineers compete on the global stage, and how technology can enhance the competitiveness of Indonesia’s construction sector.

Mr. Michael Dobie, the Regional Manager for Asia Pacific at Tensar International Ltd., provided insights into technological innovations in geotechnical materials and soil stabilization systems. Tensar International Ltd. is a world leader in geogrid stabilization technology, and Mr. Dobie explained how these technologies have transformed infrastructure development across the Asia Pacific region, especially in addressing environmental and disaster challenges.

Shaping the Future of Civil Engineering

With the overarching theme of “Innovation in Infrastructure Technology Amid the 4.0 Industrial Revolution,” the seminar provided in-depth insights for Binus University’s civil engineering students on the role of technology in shaping the future of infrastructure. The Fourth Industrial Revolution presents both challenges and opportunities for the construction sector, and the seminar enabled students to understand how technologies like Artificial Intelligence (AI), Internet of Things (IoT), and Big Data are revolutionizing the way infrastructure is designed, built, and managed.

Preparing the Next Generation of Civil Engineers

The seminar served as a pivotal moment for Binus civil engineering students to engage directly with industry professionals and deepen their understanding of technological innovations. By learning from national and international experts, students are expected to broaden their perspectives on the challenges they will face as future civil engineers. The seminar also strengthened their technical skills and preparedness to contribute to infrastructure projects both in Indonesia and on a global scale.
