Geotechnical engineering is the branch of civil engineering that deals with the behavior of earth materials. Geotechnical engineers work to understand the behavior of earth materials–soil, rock, and water–in order to create a safe and stable foundation for construction projects. No matter what project you’re working on, you’ll need to be able to assess the site and understand the subsurface conditions. That’s where your skills in soil mechanics and rock mechanics will come in handy. You might be working on the foundations for a new skyscraper, or designing a tunnel to help ease traffic congestion.
